Hired! When Lightning Strikes Twice

Hired When Lightning Strikes TwiceHired When Lightning Strikes TwiceFor Linda Schroeder, a job in IT attracted herbei from the get-go. And when times got tough, that IT focus proved her greatest strength. For Linda Schroeder, a job in IT attracted her from the get-go. And when times got tough, that IT focus proved her greatest strength. While still a student at North Dakota State University, she interned in a company called Computerland. Schroeder didnt care that she welches in the HR departement as long as she could gain experience working with information technology. She also loved sales and gained experience in both the telecommunications and travel industries, but Schroeder was always fruchtwein inspired when working with a companys software systems. While working at her next job, Worldspan, a provider of travel technology to airlines and travel agencies, Schroeder was part of a Siebel software implementation. Now she was hooked on IT, and she moved on to work at Microsoft Great Pla ins and then later at Siebel.Three years ago, the Dallas resident decided she needed a change. Through her membership on SalesLadder, she reapplied her skills and was offered a job as a sales manager for TalentKeepers, a company that offered Web-based, integrated employee-retention solutions. Although it was a departure from her work in IT sales, she enjoyed it. I was with TalentKeepers for about two-and-a-half years and then, sadly, I got a call at the end of September letting me know that they were going to have to go out of business. So it was a whirlwind.Schroeder had been aware that the economy had diminished the companys fortunes and suspected there would be layoffs ahead. She didnt anticipate a total shutdown. So, thankfully, I had been looking a little on Ladders. But after the company closed, I started aggressively looking, and it didnt even take a month to find a job. It was not even four weeks, so I felt very, very fortunate. That was the second job I found through Ladder s.Coming home to IT salesIn a weak economy, Schroeder reasoned, it was best to play to her strongest suit and return to IT sales. Although TalentKeepers had software and assessments online, it certainly wasnt the front office/back office type of software that I was used to. I was really excited when Exact offered me the mglichkeit to get back into this.As senior sales executive for Exact Software, Schroeder said she can assist companies struggling to stay afloat in a troubled economy With reductions going on and people trying to save money, we can show many industries that they are in fact losing money by not having systems in place to invoice effectively or keep track of their sales and their orders. Rather than face liquidation, companies should consider investing in systems to manage themselves more effectively and more seamlessly, Schroeder suggested. Most companies are working on a more slimmed-down scale. In most cases, they have had a reduction in force they have fewer people trying to do more. All you need then are systems in place to help you do that.Exact competes successfully with large companies such as Oracle, SAP and JD Edwards by claiming an international niche. Based in Delft, Netherlands, Exact releases its IT products in about 40 languages, all compliant with each countrys specifications. Schroeder recently visited the Netherlands for orientation and was impressed by the companys diversity They put all of their new hires through a class together, and we had people in the class from Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Belgium, and Mexico. It was like the United Nations. As many companies reduce spending and cut staff, Schroeder said, the key to surviving in software is understanding what matters most to customers. There was a time during the dot-com boom when everybody wanted CRM or everybody wanted ERP and you were able to dump your solution at people. And they wanted it. Everybody had it, and so they had to have it, too. It is not like that any more. You have to be able to go in and understand specifically what the need is of each is person within that organization. You need to be really consultative. You need to do your homework. You need to be able to show what differentiates you from other companies. And you also need to show that you are going to be a partner to them, and that you are going to be able to provide them with the support and the assistance to help them have a very successful implementation. With many top earners in the financial field out of work, some may consider a switch to a career in software. I would counsel anybody who was thinking of getting into this industry to make sure that this is something that they can be passionate about and really enjoy, Schroeder said. When confronted with a pink slip, Linda Schroeder knew that rediscovering that core of inspiration was key to finding her path again.

Advanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTC

Advanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTC Advanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTC Many potential armed services recruits wonder if its possible for them to enter one of the branches of service at an advanced enlisted rank, provided they have college credits or experience in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). Each of the services has a different policy when it comes to offering advanced rank for those with college credits and other programs, including JROTC. Heres a guide to whats available in the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marines. Army Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy When you enter the Army as a new enlisted recruit, you typically are given the rank of private or pay grade E-1. It is the lowest rank in the service. However, those with several different types of credentials can enter at a higher level: private second class (paygrade of E-2), private first class (pay grade E-3), or specialist (pay grade E-4). To join the Army as a private second class, you need one or two years of JROTC experience or 24 credits from an accredited college or university. Its also possible to join as a private second class if you earned Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts or the Gold Award in Girl Scouts, or if you completed the National Defense Cadet Corps program. To join as a pay grade E-3, private first class, you have the options of having completed: Three years of JROTCOne year of Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC)48 or more college credits To join as a specialist (E-4), you must have a four-year degree at an accredited college or university. Navy Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy Recruits normally enter the Navy at the rank of seaman recruit, with pay grade E-1. Requirements to enter at higher pay grades and ranks are similar to those for the Army. To enter at the rank of seaman apprentice (pay grade E-2), you must have completed 24 credits at an accredited college or university. Alternatively, you must have completed two years of JROTC or reached paygrade E-2 in the Navy Sea Cadet Corps program. To enter at the rank of a seaman (pay grade E-3), you have the options of having completed: Completed 48 or more college creditsReached paygrade E-3 in the Navy Sea Cadet Corps programCompleted three years in JROTCAchieved Eagle Scout as a Boy Scout or advanced to Girl Scout Gold There are programs like Navy SEAL and Nuclear Power School where if you graduate, you will be promoted to E-4. Some in the nuclear program even take the E-5 test before they even get to their first permanent duty station. Nuclear Power School is equivalent to more than 50 college credits.   Air Force Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy In the Air Force, recruits normally enter at the rank of airman basic, with pay grade E-1. Again, requirements to enter at higher ranks and pay grades are similar to those for the other armed services. If you have two years of JROTC training, you can enter at the rank of airman (pay grade E-2). You also can enter at this level if you have 20 credits from an accredited college or university, or if you have achieved Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold. To enter with the rank of airman first class (pay grade E-3), you have the options of having completed: Completed 45 college creditsOr three years of JROTC training Also, several awards, including the General Billy Mitchell Award, Amelia Earhart Award, and the General Carl A. Spaatz Award will qualify you to enter at the level of airman first class. There are special operations programs within the Air Force that upon completion will allow successful  individuals that have enlisted for a period of six years to be promoted to Airman First Class (A1C).  Schools like the indoctrination course Combat Controller (CCT) and Pararescue (PJ).   Marine Corps Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy In the Marines, recruits normally enter the service at the rank of private. Unlike the other services, the Marines dont offer the opportunity to enter with any paygrade higher than E-2. Those who enter at E-2, with a rank of private first class, have the options of having completed: Two years of JROTC or ROTCHave completed 12 credits of college classes (with a minimum grade point average of 2.3 or higher on a 4-point scale)Have achieved Eagle Scout or Girl Scout GoldHave achieved the grade of E-3 or spent 24 months in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps More on Entering with Advanced Rank Almost all recruits who join with advanced rank are paid the rate of base pay for that advanced rank right from the first day of active duty. However, in most of the services, recruits do not get to wear the rank until they graduate from basic training. Make sure the contract you sign has all of your qualifications for advance ranking and any additional steps you have to do to ensure you qualify. It is up to you to be proactive with the recruiter, or you could miss out on achieving a higher rank and pay more quickly. As with other enlistment incentives, advanced enlistment rank must be included on your enlistment contract.

The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers

The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers In an ideal world, business trips would always go ahead smoothly and as planned.  The frustrating  reality is this rarely happens. Delays and cancellations  are a fact of  life when youre traveling by flight. Not only can these obstacles affect your perceived reliability and professionalism by making you late to important functions, but they can also greatly impact your mood. If you reach your destination late, stressed, guilty, and tired, youre less likely to perform to the best of your ability. However, some airports are better than others when it comes to flight reliability. Some also have better amenities, faster Wi-Fi, and even perks like yoga studios. Want your business trip to go as smoothly as possible? If you can, try traveling through one of these great airports: 1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport  may be the  busiest airport in the country, but its also remarkably reliable. According to research from Orbitz, almost 85 percent of flights from Hartsfield-Jackson leave on time. The airport also boasts 221 different stores and 100 different dining outlets, so you have plenty of ways to fill your time if your flighty does get delayed. If youre running on fumes and you need to rest before a big meeting, try renting a private sleeping pod with a convertible sofa bed and a TV, which can be found on Concourse B. Hartsfield-Jackson also has a state of the art one-stop car rental facility, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 2. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Only 0.61 percent of flights from Seattle-Tacoma are canceled, according to Orbitz. Thats one of the  lowest cancellation rates in the country. In the unlikely event that your flight is canceled, Seattle-Tacoma also has the fastest Wi-Fi speed  of any airport in the US, so you can always remote in to your crucial meeting in a pinch - or harangue the airline on social media, if that is more your speed. Seattle-Tacoma also has two reasonably priced public lounges, so its  easy to escape the crowds when you need to add those last minute touches to your presentation. 3. John F. Kennedy Airport While John F. Kennedy Airport is probably the most iconic airport in America, it doesnt necessarily have  the best record. Only 76 percent of JFKs flights leave on time, and almost 3 percent end up getting canceled, according to Orbitz. However, those are better stats than many other airports, and JFK does have an impressive selection of amenities. With 148 different  places to eat and more coffee shops than any other airport on this list, JFK ensures youll at least pass your delays in relative comfort. JFK also has an impressive number of private members-only lounges - 29 in total. Provided your company will pay for a subscription, youve got somewhere to retire and get some rest. 4. McCarran International Airport Despite being located near Sin City, McCarran International Airport  is pretty reliable: 81 percent of its flights leave on time, and less than 1 percent are canceled, according to Orbitz. If youve been crammed into a budget carrier for a few hours, or you need to clear your head before your meeting, Fly Fit provides walking paths in the airports terminals that range from half a mile to 1.5 miles. McCarran is  also one of only two airports in the  US  with slot machines. If your pitch went badly - well, well leave that up to you! 5. OHare International Airport OHare International Airport is the  fifth busiest airport in the world, and it has a relatively good flight record, with  79 percent leaving on time, according to Orbitz. If the worst does happen, business travelers can take advantage of the airports relaxation facilities, including a yoga room and a spa. Even if youre inwardly livid, your colleagues will never know after youve hit the sauna. - It goes without saying that delays and cancelations are the most infuriating aspect of any trip, but this is especially true during high-stakes business trips. Youre more likely to make a good impression if you reach your destination on time and with minimal frustration. If you can make it work, definitely try flying from one of these airports the next time you have to travel for business. Irma Hunkeler works for  Re:signal, a digital marketing agency.

Employee Termination from an IT Perspective

Employee Termination from an IT Perspective Employee Termination from an IT Perspective Letting an employee go can be a dirty job, but the IT department must help do it - always if youre smart. It is necessary to involve IT in the employee termination process because a former employee who still has access to a companys network and proprietary corporate data is a security threat. In the majority of terminations, the former employees would never think of harming your computer systems, but why take the chance that you may have run into the one bad egg? Moreover, it is smart to conserve certain technological resources, data, and logs if the former employee or the company itself decides to pursue litigation. Finally, it is essential to integrate IT into the process to help ensure that employee termination controls are comprehensive enough to meet relevant Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. Information security and data retention policies must be company-specific and tailored to the laws under which your company operates. 3 IT Principles Companies Need to Address Nevertheless, there are at least three broad IT principles to which a company should adhere to when and after terminating an employee. Prompt notification of the termination to the IT department - even a heads up in advance of the termination meeting is appreciated so IT can bar access while the meeting is taking place.Every company should have a strictly enforced policy that clearly states who is to notify whom when someones employment is ending or has ended. This policy should also mandate that these notifications are given immediately so all of the departments involved can take prompt action. An information security contact should be among those who are notified, and this persons responsibilities should entail researching, documenting, and revoking an employees access to the companys electronically stored proprietary information and its information systems. Prudent revocation of access. Once notified, IT is responsible for immediate revocation of access and preserving any records that the company might need now or in the future. What to Do When Employment Is Terminated In the case of a terminated employee, IT should immediately revoke all computer, network, and data access the former employee has. Remote access should also be removed, and the former employee should be dispossessed of all company-owned property, including technological resources like a notebook computer and intellectual property like corporate files containing customer, sales, and marketing information. However, in the case of an employee whose end of employment is only imminent, IT should consult with the employees manager, HR, and other key decision-makers to determine the appropriate manner in which to stagger the revocation of access over the persons remaining days of employment. Just as the granting of access and security clearances should be documented for future reference, the revocation of access should also be documented, especially for legal purposes. The goal, of course, should always be to revoke access in ways that make good business sense financially, technologically, and legally. Preemptive Preservation of Data Every company needs to have data redundancy and retention policies that satisfy its business needs and adhere to applicable laws. Such policies address the backup, restoration, and preservation of corporate data in general. However, a company should also enact policies that detail when and how IT should go about preserving potentially and particularly sensitive data, records, logs, and other materials that could be of legal significance, should the company and former employee to wage a legal battle. It is especially important to do this in the case of a former employee who held a high-level position or left the company under a cloud of suspicion. The appropriation and application of these three principles should be the collective work of the companys executive staff, IT and HR departments, and legal counsel that specializes in computer forensics and the laws governing the companys use of computing technology. The results of this cooperative effort should be greater protection of corporate data as well as better preparedness for litigation regarding corporate data theft, hacking, and other forms of illegal or ill-advised uses of computing technology. Working with IT as a valued partner guarantees that these goals are achieved in the event of an employment termination.   ??

The recruiter-candidate relationship. Its complicated.

The recruiter-candidate relationship. It's complicated. The recruiter-candidate relationship. It's complicated. As a candidate, you’ve got one thing you can’t control stacked against you. Don’t blow the things you can control.Chad Oakley,  president and chief operating officer of  one of the largest recruiting firms in the country,  says, “The biggest reason job seekers get the cold shoulder from a recruiter is timing.”Even if you do everything right as a candidate and you’re working with an excellent recruiter, the company will still have a preconceived idea of the right person for the job â€" and it might be somebody with a slightly different background.“They’re looking for an exact match,” Oakley said. “I have to send out an email to half the people I connect with that says ‘thank you so much (but) there’s nothing that matches the criteria.’ ”With odds stacked this high against them, candidates better not do anything to ruin their chances even further, Oakley says.He offers up four tips to job seekers who are working with recruiters to  help them avoid the most c ommon pitfalls in the complicated recruiter-candidate relationship.Have a well-organized resume. When you’re in a recruiting position, you don’t have a lot of time to figure it out. The resume is basically the ad that gets them interested in buying into you. If you blow this opportunity, you’re never going to get the opportunity to sell yourself in an interview.Make yourself very accommodating.Being aloof doesn’t win you any points with a recruiter, either. It’s better to be eager and responsive. Recruiters are very busy people and they work with more than one candidate at a time. They don’t have time to waste on someone who doesn’t seem that interested.Be honest.Transparency is key to the partnership and one that often gets  ignored â€" to the detriment of both the candidate and the recruiter â€" as the job seeker does their best to “spin” the truth to look better in the eyes of a potential employer. If you’ve recently experienced a layoff, tell them. Recruiters are really savvy with this  type of thing because it’s  all they do. If they find out about it later, it’s  an instant credibility killer. Other areas where candidates can get into trouble for stretching the truth is  salary.Do  what you say you’re going to do.It might sound obvious, but job seekers often forget to follow up with everything they’ve promised the recruiter. Such incompetence is unacceptable because it shows what kind of employee you’d be. If you say you’ll have something by 5 p.m., make sure you have it by 5 p.m.In your job search, a recruiter might be the strongest ally you have. Following these tips could pay huge dividends as the two of you work together for that common goal.

4 Common Salary Negotiation Hurdles ( How to Overcome Them)

4 Common Salary Negotiation Hurdles ( How to Overcome Them) 4 Common Salary Negotiation Hurdles ( How to Overcome Them) You set up a meeting with your manager. You sit down, feeling confident. You ask for a raise . And then, you receive pushback. Bringing up salary discussions with your employer is nerve-racking enough - when you run into an obstacle, you might just feel like giving up altogether. But if you can summon up the courage to push back, there’s a good chance you’ll succeed: 84 percent of people confident enough to negotiate are successful. Of course, you have to be careful in your approach - there’s a right way and a wrong way to counter a rebuff. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled some of the most common salary negotiation hurdles job seekers and employees run into, as well as expert advice on how to handle them. Occasionally, you see characters in movies or TV shows going to their bosses, hat in hand, to explain that they need a raise since because they have a new baby on the way, or just put a down payment on a house. But approaching salary negotiations from a self-serving perspective is rarely effective. Instead, share what you’ve done for the company that justifies getting a raise. “Come up with a list of your accomplishments, such as revenue you’ve generated for the company, successes around cutting costs, improving efficiencies or customer satisfaction you’ve achieved,” recommends Steve Saah, Executive Director of Robert Half Finance & Accounting . “Communicate specific examples during the salary negotiation process to strengthen your case for why you deserve a raise.” When employees demonstrate that their efforts have had a material (positive!) impact on the organizations, companies often reward them financially to a) incentivize them to do more great work and b) stay at the company for longer - hiring and training new employees is expensive! Rebuttals like this are exactly why you need to do your research before arriving at the negotiation table. If you don’t have a concrete idea of how much you deserve to be paid, you won’t be able to effectively respond. “You are much more likely to get a raise if your boss believes by walking out the door that you can earn at least 15 percent more than your current salary. While threatening to quit is not a good negotiation technique, educating your boss about what the market is paying for your skills (assuming it’s much higher than what you’re making) sends the same message in a less offensive way,” says Marc Prosser, Co-Founder of FitSmallBusiness.com . One free tool worth leveraging is Glassdoor’s Know Your Worth™ salary estimator - just enter a few data points like your job title, company and location, and you’ll get a free, personalized estimate of your market worth. “A response to this [statement] could be, ‘Based on my research, the market rate for a position similar to mine is in the range of ____.’ Use that as a starting point for the discussion,” Saah suggests. If you’re skeptical about the veracity of this statement, it might still be worth lightly pushing back. You can do this by meeting the employer on their level, and talking about things in terms of dollars and cents. “Begin by understanding what the dollar value of salary increase that you want is. Say it is $1,000. Then determine ways that you can identify” - or have already identified - “$1,000 in potential budget savings or revenue increases and propose some solutions to your manager. This will show that you respect the budget process and are sensitive to managing the bottom line,” says Patrick Lynch, President of staffing firm CMP . But if you come to realize that it’s truly out of their hands, ask when you can revisit the conversation - and hold them to it. “You might say, ‘I appreciate your point of view or the financial state of the company right now. What do I need to do to earn consideration for a raise or promotion in the future?’ Then, work on any areas identified and show your progress,” says Linda Swindling, author of Ask Outrageously! The Secret to Getting What You Really Want . Finally, see if you can negotiate for perks or benefits that don’t cost any money. “Discuss other non-monetary perks, such as additional time off, telecommuting one day per week or more flexible hours if the company can’t bump up your pay,” Saah proposes. At this point, what you should do next really depends on your personal circumstances. If you’ve tried all of the above tactics to no avail and aren’t willing to leave your current position, you may just want to revisit the conversation at a more opportune moment. But if you’re prepared to walk, you might as well put the ball in your employer’s court one last time. “State in as polite a way as possible that there is a market rate for your talents, and that it is your hope that your current employer will make it a priority to pay you in accordance with your market rate and the contribution you are making to the organization,” advises Brett Hoogeveen, co-owner of leadership & culture consulting firm MindSet, LLC . “What you are saying here is that you want to stay with your employer, but that you are making it clear that the employer needs to take accountability for keeping up with market rates if they want to retain your talent.” If your employer comes around, great! If they don’t, it’s time to keep an eye open for new opportunities. If a company isn’t willing to pay you what you deserve, another company likely will.

James Comey shows what happens when we lose our jobs and our identities

James Comey shows what happens when we lose our jobs and our identities James Comey shows what happens when we lose our jobs and our identities FBI Director James Comey was abruptly fired on Tuesday night. Comey reportedly heard about it while he was giving a speech as the news flashed on TV screens behind him; he was so unprepared for it that he believed it to be a prank. Afterward, instead of making a statement, Comey went silent: he pulled out of several events, including a speech to fellow FBI agents and scheduled testimony in front of the Senate.Comey’s firing illuminates an issue many successful people face: what do you when your job is your identity- the reason you get invited to things - and then you lose it, or fear that you will? Very often, you may start to question who you are, you may even start to feel like you’ve lost your purpose in life. After a flurry of initial interest, invitations may drop off and you may start to feel like a pariah in the industry you had a strong position in.Our jobs, ourselvesWe spend at least a third of our lives at work - and it’s often more for overachievers and hard worke rs - so it’s not surprising we tie our own happiness to how well we’re doing at work. It’s easy to feel like your job defines you.  A 2014 Gallup poll found that  55% of U.S. workers “get a sense of identity from their job,” compared to 42% who feel that it’s “just what you do.”A 2017 study published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior of 377 British employees surveyed three times in 2014 says that “job insecurity” and the stigma attached to unemployment can negatively impact people’s “social identity” and “well-being.”Our professional titles can be pretty closely connected to how we identify ourselves and our perceived  self-worth, so fear of losing jobs can feel like we’re losing our social standing, and more importantly, who we think we are deep down.Questioning your identityPart of the sadness around job loss is the sense of exclusion; you’re separated not just from your title and your organization, but your workmates, your daily habits, y our place in the world of work. If you think you might lose your job soon, it’s not uncommon to feel like you’ve already been excluded from a club of “lucky” people with income. “It is shown  that increased perceptions of job insecurity are likely to lead people to identify less with the employed population.  People who perceived their job as more insecure were also more likely to feel less ‘belonging’ to the employed  working society; they de?ned themselves less as employed people. This  reflects  an impression often anecdotally reported by job-insecure workers, of already being ‘at the margins’ or pushed out of employment,” wrote  Eva Selenko, Anne Mkikangas  and Christopher B. Stride  in the Journal of Organizational Behavior.   So even if you still have a job, you might feel like you already lost it. “When somebody’s employment is secure, their social identity as an ’employed person’ may not explicitly come to mind very often. However, when the loss of a job becomes more salient, people may start to become increasingly aware of being identified as part of an alternative, stigmatized out-group: the unemployed,” said a  blog post by the Association for Psychological Science. In short: No one wants to be left behind.Letting go of the idea that your job is your identityFor those of us who tie who we are to our careers, it can be hard to deal when our livelihoods are in question. In an emotional piece in  Good Housekeeping, Melanie Gardiner wrote about losing a job she loved, and just how hard that loss hit her. It’s an account that may resonate with many of us.“…I proceeded to throw myself an epic pity party for the next couple of months. I barely left my couch. I avoided music, friends, family, and just about anything that once brought me joy. I let days go by mindless ly,” Gardiner wrote. So how do you fix your feelings if you’re actually unemployed?  You might be tempted to stew in your sadness, worrying  about  what you think you could have done to avoid losing your job- but you don’t have to for long. “The human condition is ‘should’ve, could’ve, would’ve…When you’re beating yourself up, think, ‘I did the best that I could under those circumstances’ and ask ‘What can I learn and go forward with?’” career counselor Judith Gerberg told SELF. It’s completely possible to get over your grief if you lose your job or think you will. Just don’t forget this: you are more than  where you work. Your identity is something you don’t owe your boss.

Impressing is in your best interests How to be taken seriously

Impressing is in your best interests How to be taken seriously Impressing is in your best interests How to be taken seriously Being taken seriously at work takes time and trust. Whether you’re the youngest, the least experienced, a new recruit â€" or all of the above â€" proving yourself can feel like an uphill challenge. The earlier you can prove yourself though, the sooner you’ll relax into the role and be able to perform to your best ability. We spoke with the career experts at CABA who offered their tips on gaining professional respect.Dress the partMost workplaces have a dress code, whether official or unofficial. If you ignore it and dress too casually or too flamboyantly, you risk looking unprofessional. Choose clothes that are appropriate for your work environment â€" if you want to be taken seriously, dress to standard.Be punctualIf you have a tendency to arrive at work late or miss the start of meetings, your manager and colleagues will start losing respect for you. Revise your wake-up time if you have to, as the extra half hour in the morning could see you getting to work punctually. Even if you’re only occasionally late, it will be noticed, and eventually, you’ll gain a reputation for having poor time management.Make eye contactIf you’re keen to make a positive impression and engage people, try to look them in the eye when you’re talking to them. Avoiding eye contact altogether can make you appear secretive, mistrustful or simply uninterested.Use positive body languageThe right body language can make you appear more confident, experienced and professional â€" all traits that could help others take you more seriously. A University College London study recently found that women are more likely to be taken seriously at work if they adopt a strong, typically male stance (the so-called ‘power’ pose in the study included having feet shoulder width apart). But there’s more to positive body language than ‘power’ stances. For instance, try to look straight ahead rather than down at the floor, sit or stand straight with your shoulders back instead of slouching, and adopt an ‘open’ posture rather than crossing your arms or legs. When you meet someone, greet them with a firm handshake.Speak upIf you have something interesting or important to say during a meeting or while speaking with colleagues, don’t be shy and keep it to yourself. Your confidence will impress, while your ideas could spark off further points for discussion. Speak calmly and clearly with an even tone. Employ professional language â€" try not to swear or use slang or casual words, as you may appear unprofessional. On the other hand, don’t feel you need to say something for the sake of it. Stay quiet and listen to what others are saying if you know you can’t offer anything valuable. It’s better to say nothing than to blurt out something foolish or inappropriate. But do ask intelligent questions, as it shows you’re engaged in what’s being discussed.Be politeGood manners go a long way; Behaving rudely or inconsiderately isn’t going to win you any fans at your w orkplace. Similarly, with social media, manners are essential. Never write anything derogatory about the company you work for, your boss or colleagues online â€" you may not think anyone will notice but, chances are, someone will.Prepare thoroughlyTry not to turn up to meetings unprepared or underprepared. Get a good grasp of what’s being discussed beforehand. When you think you’ve prepared sufficiently, do that little bit more. People tend to pay attention to those who are knowledgeable, so all your efforts won’t go unnoticed. At the same time don’t brag â€" if you try too hard to impress, you may be perceived as arrogant and obnoxious.Play up your skillsConsider working on skills that will get you noticed. Which skills does your organization value? Focus on building these. The skills don’t have to be technical ones, as companies also need employees with strong ‘soft skills’ such as problem-solving, ability to adapt well to change and being a good communicator. If you already possess the skills your company values, share these with your employer and co-workers. For example, you could offer to take on a project or seek out other opportunities that enable you to showcase your skills and bring them to others’ attention. Once people associate you with certain superior skills, your opinions will be valued all the more.Whether you’re starting out in your career, recently moved to a new company or want to revitalise colleagues’ opinion of you, it’s important to remember that anyone â€" regardless of age, gender or status â€" can be affected by a lack of recognition, even if they’ve been in the business for decades.Whether you’re just starting out, getting back to work, changing direction or launching a business, CABA offers an extensive range of career services â€" simply visit caba.org.uk.This article first appeared on Your Coffee Break.
